2 years ago Pengu Saves Christmas came out. with help from @chocoholicmonkey and @stepford Since then i have on and off built upon the foundation in that game with tighter controls and more features as well as prettier art.

But i'll be honest most of this year, i have not been working on the game, i would love to make pengu a standalone full game, not even christmas related. But making a full ass spanking game, almost just one guy is super hard and draining. Especially when i dont have an income (i've been looking for work for fucking ages god damn man)


But you know, a year came and went, and i have a solid foundation, so maybe it's about time Pengu visits newgrounds for christmas again. Of course a lot of people would like it. I guess it's just really up to me, if i am up for the task again. And maybe i could get some level-design help from someone? Cause that part i'll be honest is really difficult.


This is me rambling, but it's because i'm undecided if i should do it or not. I have other projects im toying with as well! So if i start work on Pengu for this christmas it will have to take my full focus till the end of the year i think. Give me enlightening advice please!!!

Some time ago i made a little post asking for ideas for a new Pengu game, and it was actually my intention to finish and release one this December, both as a shorter demo here on Newgrounds, and a fully fledged release to be bought on steam!?!


But sadly reality set in, and it's not feasable, and also releasing a winter game outside of winter doesn't make sense, so because of that, i'll have to postpone it to next year. Where i really hope i can achieve my goal in a way that i'm proud of.


For funsies, though i can share a lot of the progress we did make.


This next game is taking heavy inspiration from Sonic, meaning loops and cool gimmicks, some of which can be seen below.

As you can see it's not for a lack of features that I'm postponing it.

Most of the base is actually there. Way more time consuming than that, turned out to be level design and graphics.


Pengu goes so fast that the levels have to be super duper big to compensate, and whilst i have made levels before, it proved to still be very difficult for me, so it's something i have to rethink come next year to do it correctly.


As a close, i am excited to revisit Pengu's big game again sometime next year, and i hope you'll support us when it happens. Also a very special epic thanks to @chocoholicmonkey whose always there helping me with Pengu, and also did the backgrounds in these tiny gifs, they're also a key part in figuring out the story and style. They're very cool go follow : - )

Some years ago, some of you will have been playing Pengu Saves Christmas. It was a live updating 12 day advent calendar. Leading up to Christmas. It was developed by myself, with help from @stepford and amazing art from @chocoholicmonkey


Now comes the time i am considering what a sequel to such a game would look like. I would love and appreciate any wishes any of you would have for more pengu!

  • Specific controls?
  • 2-player?
  • More levels?
  • More visual themes?
  • Gameplay mechanics?
  • "make it more like sonic"/"make it more like mario"
  • something i didn't think of?

Continued from part 1 (i didn't know there was an image limit before now lol)

At this point there was about 12 hours left. And i was insanely tired, and frustrated with making features. I did manage to be able to drag your quests onto the board though. Making the quests zoom off screen, and then reappear on the grass near the bullet-tin board took a super long time to figure out, and did not help my dwindling sanity.

When i finally went to bed i literally had neverending stress dreams about this.

Here several hours later and the deadline very imminent, i was realising i wouldn't be able to make the other systems i would like to include to complete the gameplay. But i mustered through and added little npc's going to your shop or the bullettin board at the top of the screen. As well as many more items, you would supposedly be able to collect from adventureres after the complete your quests.


You would then use those items to craft better loot, and sell it back to others for a profit.

I had here decided i would stop. There was about 3 hours left on the jam, and i could have included a bit more. But i knew i wouldn't be able to make it playable as i intended anyway, so i decided to call it quits early and finally lay down again.


The end product is unfinished but still very pretty i think.

And i would definetely like to use some of what i made in a future game maybe. More papers please games where you interact with objects or papers up close is very cool i think.


more ideas i wanted to include but couldn't even consider cause it was too tight

  • Crystal ball with stock-market, telling you which items are hot, or which are hot garbage. So you can plan accordingly
  • An annoying rival (like i sketched in my first image) checking on you and running a competing business
  • Being able to decide prices on the objects you sell, too high and no one will buy it. too little and you aren't earning anything.


The table tinker simulator aesthetic i really like, and would like to explore more. It's hard to figure out what works well for a game though, i've recently been playing Shadows of doubt, which is a detective game where you try to pinpoint who your target is using limited information, and deductive reasoning. I think is really cool. And would love to do something similar.


Also if i could come up with an excuse to make and have the player tinker with a computer or telephone in a fantasy game like mine that would be super fun. Still brainstorming.

I recently took part in the GMTKjam. It's a gamejam hosted by the GameMakers Toolkit guy on youtube.

The theme was revealed to be "Roles Reversed" And we had 48 hours to then develop a game around that.

Here i'll post my thoughts and development progress as it happened while i was working and brainstorming

The brainstorming started

Decided to go with quest writer idea. And base the gameplay off of papers please.

Idea being you write quests to gather certain items and pin them on the towns board for random adventurers to take on.

After a while i had the base of a paper's please style setup down. Being able to drag an object from one scene to another.


What's happening here, is there is 3 scenes, actually really far about in the game world. Each then has a camera attached, and the camera's contents are drawn to the window right next to eachother.

When the cursor drags some object to a scene, the object is actually teleported all the way to the other scene, and it's state is changed to be either big or small to fit the scene.

I imagined you would have a maximum of 3 papers at a time you could manage, and write on. If you did something wrong you can then trash it and get a new fresh piece of paper. Having new papers spawned in worked pretty well. Though making sure the object you drag pops to the top of all the other objects turned out to be pretty difficult. And my perfectionism for neat animations started early here

I wondered how you would actually write on the pages. So i thought you would have an enclopedia filled with both game instructions and specific words you could then paste onto pages.

Some extra hours later, way more tired i managed to get a start on the enclyclopedia and added little pages you can sift through. I realized my artstyle might have become a draw-back because i had to draw all the text manually in aseprite, with not much to use. And i wasn't completely sure on what to write either. so it was very messy. I'm happy i included some funny doodles in there though.

After a long ass rest, i continued with my idea on having text samples you could click on to paste them. For that to work, i made every sample be an object that spawns in at the right location, when you turn the page. Though that alone doesn't mean the text actually sticks to the book haha.

Some extra hours on that, and now the words stick, i also decided i wanted to add funny images. The text here would be purely for flair and not actually do anything on the quest. But it would be fun to spam different phrases and images regardless i thought


I also pondered for long how i would actually tie meaning to whatever quests you write. Even though you typed words and phrases on a paper, i would need to code it in a way so a simple game npc's can actually understand it, this would continue to stump me till the end.

Finally came the crux of the game, being able to paste from your book onto quest papers. I spent extra time making it look fancy with the quill and ink-bottle. Which may not have been neccesary, but it also just felt better so...

Despite it being a game about putting quests on a board, i only made the board really late. And here spent a super long time making the transition back and forth look good. Behind the scenes it's a codey mess, so if i started over i would try to come up with more modular approaches. But under the tight deadline, i just forced my way through it

It's been exactly 1 year since Pengu Saves Christmas was released


Where for 12 days leading up to christmas a new level was released to the public

( and many tweaks and bugfixes where made )


I would of course have loved to make a sequel, but since it was such an involved project, and some of us had gotten really busy there was no time. Tho i am happy to see that some people came back to see Pengu once more!


Also check out the Tankmas ADVENTure! You might see a familiar face ( :



Maybe Pengu will get some more games, maybe even a fully fledged game sold on steam and nintendo-switch and and and... Yeah that'd be nice, no matter what happens i'm sure you'll see more of him!

Me and @chocoholicmonkey have worked hard the last (i think 2 months?!?) on this animation parody of Death Stranding, and i think we'll be able to share it before the end of this week, so i am very excited, and i hope you'll be on the lookout for it too!

If you didn't see it, Bulb Boy was released. Me and @chocoholicmonkey made it in 2 weeks as part of the #NoticeMeGamejam hosted by Opera & Gamemaker studio. After the formalities of that was over we shared here on newgrounds as well of course.


After getting some valid feedback here we've now updated it a smidge to fix bugs and make it a less stressful experience, the "changelog" is at the bottom of the description.

If you've reviewed it prior and had gripes with it hope you'll give it another try (:

It will first be published on OperaGX as part of the competition, but following that after some slight tweaks we will try to add it here on Newgrounds as well. Tho i'd really appreciate ya'll checking it out there as well if you can (:
